Global Read Aloud, SSEP contest and more

It is hard to believe we are more than halfway through October and that we have had about one month of learning together as a class.  We have been reading Pax, a novel by Sara Pennypacker as part of out participation in the global read aloud. We are improving our skills at using reading strategies like: visualization, making connections and determining importance.  You can find more details about the book and author here: http://www.sarapennypacker.com/pennypacker-pax.htm .  You can find more information about the Global Read Aloud here: https://theglobalreadaloud.com/info-for-2015/info-for-2015-2/ .

So far we have had one Mystery Skype with a class in Argentina reading Pax too.  We hope to have discussions with them again in the near future.  Not only does the Mystery Skype enable students to hone their geography skills, but it also encourages us to learn more about students around the world. On Tuesday, October 18 we will try another mystery Skype, I wonder who we will meet?

In addition, we are participating in the District SSEP science contest.  Hopefully one or two teams will have a proposal ready to submit by November 1.  You can find out more details about what we are studying in science by following the link to our Science page on the right.

Welcome to Mrs. Elie's Class 2016-2017

Moody Elementary started the first week of school with students in Grade level groups learning about the Zones of Regulation.  Students also learned about expectations for hallways and walking through the school.  If you would like an introduction to the Zones of Regulation, you can watch this video here:

It is hard to believe we are in the second week as a class.  We have been participating in a variety of activities to help us get to know each other.  In addition we started our Lucky Stars Scratch n Win not only to encourage Green Zone behaviours but also to learn about probability.  There are 500 tickets to be won this Term.  440 out of 500 tickets are prize winners.  So how many tickets are not winning tickets?  Students recognize that there is only 1 chance to win a pizza party for the class but there are 50 tickets which will let you choose a prize from the prize bin.  So far we are having quite a bit of fun with this.

This term we hope to participate in the 2016 Global Read Aloud by reading the book PAX.  In addition, SD43 has a wonderful opportunity for students to participate in the SSEP which involves a science contest to send an experiment to the international space station.  Finally, Mrs. Elie is an ambassador for the Kids Guide to Canada initiative where students will be sharing their ideas about where we live with other students across the country.  Watch for details about all of these on our Science, Social Studies and PAX pages on this blog.

Finally, we will be using Freshgrade to create digital portfolios of our learning for the year.  This is a district-wide initiative so we are waiting for our student accounts to be set up so students can communicate their learning to their parents on an ongoing basis.  There are a few technical glitches to be resolved but stay tuned!

Looking forward to a great Year!

National Aboriginal Day June 21st

We are preparing to celebrate National Aboriginal Day with some First Nations story-telling, bannock eating, bracelet weaving and game playing.  We are going to share some of the fun on June 21 through our class twitter account @ClassElie.  Stay tuned!  We were also fortunate to receive some resources from the department of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada.

Check out the link for learning resources here: https://www.aadnc-aandc.gc.ca/eng/1100100013251/1100100013253

Here is a photo of one of the baked blueberry bannocks Mrs. Elie made.

Mrs. Elie has made a lot of bannock.  When she was in grade 4, 5 and 6, her school used to celebrate Festival de Voyageur.   Students used to fry bannock in electric frying pans throughout the school.  Mrs. Elie also learned how to bake bannock from her mom, Lynne Maller, a third generation baker.  Lynne received teachings from first nations people in The Pas and Northern BC.

The Marshmallow Challenge

Today we participated in a "The Marshmallow Challenge."  You can watch the video about "The Marshmallow Challenge" from TED 2010 here:

The original "Marshmallow Challenge" was created and studied by Peter Skillman.  His presentation notes interesting observations about how people learn, reach a goal, design something and succeed.  Significantly, he observes that repeatedly, kindergarten students produced taller structures than business school graduates.

If you want to run your own Marshmallow Challenge, please check out this website for details:

Stay tuned for images or videos of our structures.
