Emily Carr

We are starting to study tree art in class, and one of the most famous Canadian artists, Emily Carr, has painted many works that center on trees and forests.  We watched this short video about her in class:

Colour

Watch:

Is there a colour or combination of colouts that triggers a specific memory or thought in you?
Does yellow make you feel happy and warm because it reminds you of a sunny day at the beach?
Knowing the impacts colours have will help you control the messages you wish to convey in your own artwork.
Go to the Artists Toolkit Website:  Explore the Toolkit
Choose the section about colour

Try the activities in Watch, Find and Create.

Here is an interesting article about how colour affects your mood , thank you Laine for the link: Color Psychology

Investigate:
Go to the website for the Roy Henry Vickers Art Gallery.  Take a look at some of his original prints. How do his colour choices impact your feelings when you look at his works? Which of his prints do you find most interesting? Why?

If you have extra time, research 5 facts about Roy Henry Vickers.
You may have seen his picture books too.
Here is a video where Roy Vickers talks about the book, Peace Dancer

Value

In our project, "Value Snowflakes," students will be asked to experiment with colour and value to make an interesting product.

Watch this video to learn about Value:

Value Snowflake Project
Your final project should look something like this:

You will need: 1 piece of white cardstock, white paper, 5 different colours of pencil crayons, scissors, ruler, a pencil, and a glue stick

Step 1
Make 4 square papers - in the images below there is a 8 1/2 x 8 1/2 inch square, a 14 x 14 cm square  and a 10cm x 10 cm square.

Step 2
Create 3 or 4  -- 6 point snowflakes -- if you need to learn how to make a six-point snowflake, go to this website

Step 3
Arrange and glue 3 or 4 snowflakes onto your cardstock paper

Step 4
Trim your snowflakes.  Then get your ruler and draw 5 lines across your page using a pencil.  Finally choose 5 pencil crayons to use to colour your project.

Step 5
Use 2 colours for each section of your paper.  For each section, the snowflake should be one colour and the background another colour.  You want your snowflake to stand out so consider making the outside of the snowflake the darkest.  Then colour the centre lightly to create value.  See the images below.

Line
We have been working on using line to make interesting Fall Doodles.  In order to understand "line" as an element of art and hone our skills, we watched some of the videos below:
