Geography and Mystery Skype

Geography Games and more

Try some of these games to learn more about Geography.  Which one is your favourite?  What criteria would you use to evaluate these games?  How would someone decide which game was a "good" game?

One of the things we will do to test our geography skills is to participate in Mystery Skypes.

Mystery Skype 2019-2020
In September, our class started to Mystery Skype.  The first class we found this year lives in Long Island, New York.  A Mystery Skype occurs when our class uses Skype to contact another class somewhere in the world.  Next we take turns asking yes/no questions to see if we can figure out where in the world the other school is.

In order to be successful in a Mystery Skype, we have to be paying attention so that we do not repeat previously asked questions.  We also need to know a lot of places and geographic landforms in our own province because we have been asked questions like: "Are you North of Kimberly, BC?" "Are you west of Kelowna?" "Are you near, as in are in you in the same province or territory as the Great Bear Rainforest?"  "Are you east of Highway 5?"

When we are looking for the other class, we start with questions like: "Are you North of the Equator?"; "Are you in North America?"  Then we try to determine country, province/state/territory. Finally we try to ascertain their proximity to a major city or land form or landmark.  We use atlases, maps and google maps to help us zero in on their location.  Usually we try to get a Google Earth image of their school too.

In past years we have "found" classes in Missouri, Texas, Alberta, New Hampshire, Connecticut, California, Argentina, Jamaica, Illinois, Winnipeg, New Zealand and Ontario.
